NESAWG Work Group - Messaging & Outreach

What will inspire and motivate people to think and act regionally with regard to food systems, and have a stronger commitment to their region? We are exploring effective ways of communicating our message.

Seeking points of emotional connection in a spatial relationship

When it comes to thinking about place, most people have the strongest emotional connection with their home/neighborhood. Associated with that are the concepts of:
Regional—foods, geography, history, diversity, seasonality/weather, self-reliance
Pride in what makes us unique—heritage, landscape, resourcefulness
Neighbors—interdependent economy
Commons—ownership, stewardship, this is our food, our land

When this group began at the"It Takes a Region" Conference, November 2009, we found some people experienced tension between the concepts of local and regional. Many did not have an intuitive understanding of regionalism and resisted the idea as competing with local. When we explored messages that built consensus around regionalism, the message everyone like best described regional as "a thousand points of local."

Hopefully we can use this group forum to build on these ideas and share messages which are effective in promoting regional values.

There is great content from the meeting last month. What were the action steps that came out of this session?
BTW, is there a NESAWG Facebook Page? I could not find one.

i think the messaging workshop will be a discussion group. how it plays out depends upon who is participating and the issues they wish to discuss.

Is there a set "panel" or is it a little more free form? I am in marketing, and interested in helping mission-driven orgs in the for & non-profit spaces maximize their impact with social media...been doing some work on my own.

Hi, Wayne,
The agenda for the annual conference includes a messaging session that will include social media. What are you doing these days?

Hello! I attended the NESAWG event last year...I'm thinking that I may be able to add value to the event by creating a session on the role of social media for spreading the message about the need for strong regional food economies; how small producers/advocacy groups can leverage these outlets to engage and build their communities. Do you think this would be a valuable addition to the event?
